Artists in Residence program in Yamacho District
Our Artist in Residence program welcomes artists working in various genres to live and work in the historic district of Takaoka. During their stay, they immerse themselves in our way of life and become part of the community.
We offer artists the ability to gather public exposure for their work and accessible opportunities for local residents to experience diverse artistic expressions.
About Yamacho District
Takaoka was established when the second lord, Maeda Toshinaga, built the Takaoka Castle about 400 years ago. After overcoming several crises, the third lord, Maeda Toshitsune, transformed the castle town into a town of commerce and industry. The Yamacho District (Yamacho-suji) was a center of distribution and prospered as the center of commerce. The merchant culture flourished and has been handed over beyond generations since then.
In 1900, the town was damaged by a massive fire. Houses were rebuilt with the fire-proof Dozo-zukuri structure, and some of the houses still remain in the district. These houses, a fusion of Japanese traditional and Western architecture, deeply reflect the merchant culture of the Yamacho District.
This fall, we will collaborate with “Takaoka de Sumu.”
“Takaoka de Sumu” is a collective of artists inaugurated in Takaoka City who draw inspiration from their surroundings. Immersed in the local environment, culture, and cuisine, these artists channel their experiences into their creations, fostering a serene state of mind. The “Takaoka de Sumu” exhibition showcases the essence and warmth of their homeland as seen through the lens of artistic expression.
Takaoka de Sumu artists will join the residency with other participating artists. All artists work in the same location, although each piece is unique.
The completed works will be shown at an extraordinary exhibition from September 21st (Saturday) to 23rd (Monday). Experience firsthand how each artist interprets the essence of Takaoka through their unique perspectives.

Takaoka Dozo-zukuri Museum
The house was built in 1903.
The former owner of the house, the Murosaki family was a merchant family that engaged in the wholesale business of cotton thread and cloth.
You can see inside of the main house and walk through the original “Tori-doma” (An earthen floor connecting the entrance and the backyard), which leads you to their storehouse.

Takaoka de Sumu
Last September, the “Takaoka de Sumu” exhibition, marking its fifth year, took place at three locations along Yamacho District.
One of the venues was our museum, where artworks by various artists were on display.
Takaoka Craft Ichibamachi will also be held during the residency.
Experience a day exploring Takaoka’s culture, influenced by artisans, merchants, and locals. Only here can you discover unique experiences.
Since 2012, “Ichibamachi” has been held in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture.
It highlights the town’s charm through a focus on craftsmanship.
The entire town is the venue, offering various activities: see, learn, experience, shop, and eat. Last year, over 20,000 people visited, enjoying 56 different attractions.
In its 13th year in 2024, the event will showcase exhibitions and shops by craft artists from inside and outside the prefecture, along with open factory tours, workshops, guided town walks, and culinary events. Additionally, a forum led by esteemed guests will explore the future of Ichibamachi.
Uniting over 400 years of history, the town eagerly awaits to welcome you.

(Hereafter referred to as “the artist” regardless of background or genre.) -The artist should understand the purpose of his or her visit to the Takaoka Dozo-zukuri Museum and be able to stay or participate during the period for which they are invited. -The artist who can interact and establish good relationships with other artists and local residents during their stay. -The artist should be able to explain their artwork in English or Japanese. -In good health condition. |
| Pay by artists | -Travel Expenses -Living Expenses -Production Expenses -The Work After The End of Residence: The artist must remove and pack the work by themselves after the end of the exhibition. Transportation and/or shipping expenses shall be borne by the artist. |
| Support for artists | -Accommodation *The expense will not be paid for days residing outside Takaoka City for personal reasons such as traveling etc. -Hold an exhibition to present the results of the residency. |
